Dato’ George Varughese read law and graduated with LL.B (Hons) from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1988 and was called to the Bar of England & Wales after having obtained the Degree of an Utter Barrister from the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn. Thereafter, was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 1991.
Dato’ George commenced legal practice in 1991 at Messrs Manjeet & Associates as a legal assistant and was made a partner in 1996. In 1997 he moved to Messrs Thomas, Bala & Associates as a partner.
With several years of civil and criminal litigation experience, in 1998, Dato’ George established the law firm of ‘George Varughese & Co’ (later rebranded as ‘George Varughese’ in 2009). In 1998, he also obtained his Masters in Law (LLM) from University of Malaya, and later became an Arbitrator with the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) and a Member of the Malaysian Institute of Arbitrators (M.M.I.Arb), a Sports Arbitrator of the Sports Arbitration Tribunal (AIAC), an accredited Construction Industry Adjudicator with the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) and a certified Mediator (AIAC).
Years of dedication to the legal profession and to the Bar Council saw Dato’ George rise to helm the Malaysian Bar as President from 2017 until 2019. During this time, he also served as a member of the Advocates and Solicitors Disciplinary Board (ASDB) and Legal Profession Qualifying Board (LPQB).
Dato’ George had also served as the Chairman of the Ad-Hoc Disciplinary Committee, PIAM (2013-2019), a member of Technical Committee, Service Export Fund, MATRADE (2017-2019), a member of Taylor’s Law School Legal Profession Advisory Panel (2017-2019) and member of Editorial Advisory Board of Sessions and Magistrate’s Cases (SMC) (2017-2019).
In 2019, Dato’ George was appointed as a Judicial Commissioner, and in which office he served at the High Court of Malaya in Penang until 2021.
Thereafter, in 2022, Dato’ George returned to practice with the firm, where his vision continues to lend veracity and professionalism to the work of the firm’s most experienced and budding practitioners alike.
In 2024 Dato’s George forward GV group has practice in which the firm is a member.
